How to Wear a Tutu or Feather Costume for Mardi Gras

Posted by on 1/3/2013 to General Information
Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday is a fun celebration that takes place in February. It's held in New Orleans but that shouldn't stop you from celebrating and dressing her in the Mardi Gras theme.  A tutu is the perfect piece! After all, it's a fun reason to play dress up  for older siblings or moms too. Here are some fun costume ideas to kick off the fun holiday whether you're celebrating at home, or going to a party or parade. Traditionally the Mardi Gras colors are green, purple and gold. They all have their own meaning, so you'll want to stick with those colors.

Mardi Gras TutuMardi Gras tutu outfit - Start with a Kelly green, purple and gold colored tutu. Any length is suitable, depending on the child's age. Pair it with a coordinating top, preferably in one of the three traditional colors. Throw on a pair of beads. You can easily find one of these beaded necklaces at a dollar bill store or even a craft store and I can bet you they'll be growing them from the parades if you're in New Orleans. Depending on where you live, you'll want her to wear something underneath the Mardi Gras tutu. If you're in a warm weather state, opt for biker shorts. If you're in a cold weather state, leggings or heavy tights are perfect. Finish off the outfit with a fun mask that you can make yourself and big tulle hair bow in the matching purple, green and gold colors. After the day is over, she can wear the tutu for dress up in the playroom or use it as a photo prop.

MARDI GRAS COSTUMEMardi Gras Feature Costume - Want her to really stand out in something flamboyant and totally fun and festive? Have her wear a feather dress or feather skirt. A brightly colored purple feather skirt with a tee shirt or tank top in bright green will make definitely make a statement. If you want something a little more over the top, consider a feature dress. Add a mask and headpiece to complete the look. Either feather piece is a must have if you're planning on visiting New Orleans for this event.

There are crazy costumes everywhere, and yours will scream splendor! After you have the wardrobe planned, let the fun begin as you listen to the music of the marching bands, eat cotton candy, and watch the exciting parades and floats. It's truly a fun event for the entire family!
